How it’s calculated

  1. 1

Sections are the fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up; posts are one more than sections.

  2. 2

Pickets are about 5½ inches wide with a small gap, so roughly 2 per foot of fence.

  3. 3

Each post is usually set in about two 50 lb bags of concrete.

Before you buy

  • Add one post for each corner and two for each gate.

  • Check your property line and local fence rules (height, setbacks, permits) before you dig.

  • Call 811 a few days before digging so buried utility lines get marked, free.

Questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

Most wood fences use posts 6 to 8 feet apart. Closer spacing makes a sturdier fence, especially in high wind.

How deep should fence posts be?

A common rule is a third to half of the post's above-ground height, and below the frost line in cold climates.
