How it’s calculated

  1. 1

Area is length × width; each tile covers its width × height in inches ÷ 144 square feet.

  2. 2

We add 10% for cuts and breakage (15% for diagonal or herringbone) and divide by one tile's area, rounding up.

  3. 3

Tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up, is the boxes to buy.

Before you buy

  • Buy all your tile from the same lot (dye lot number on the box) so the color matches.

  • Large tiles need a very flat floor; uneven subfloors cause lippage and cracks.

  • Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs: discontinued tile is hard to match.

Questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

About 10% extra for a straight layout and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns, small rooms with many cuts, or fragile tile.

How many 12 × 24 tiles are in a square foot?

A 12 × 24 inch tile covers 2 sq ft, so half a tile per square foot. A 100 sq ft floor needs 50 tiles before waste, about 55 with 10% extra.
