BIKE LIBRARY INC

Iowa City Bike Library lends out bicycles that volunteers have repaired from donated bikes. Adult bikes are checked out for six months against a refundable deposit, and kids' bikes are sold outright. The shop also runs Rent-A-Bench, where people use the tools and repair stands to work on their own bikes, along with youth programs, Cycling Without Age and beginner-friendly group rides.

Checkouts are first come, first served and bikes are not held, so a test ride is worth arranging since sizing matters. Deposits run from $75 to $300, with most between $100 and $200, and a $50 sustainability fee is kept when a bike comes back in good condition. The shop is not a commercial repair business and does not take bikes for hire. Donations are accepted whenever volunteers are on site, and payment is by cash, check or card. It is on South Gilbert Court, just south of Kirkwood Avenue.
