South Union Bread Café

South Union Bread Café is a downtown Des Moines lunch café that grew out of Chef George Formaro's artisan bread bakery. It is known for its sandwiches, fresh salads and made-from-scratch soups, with a daily hot sandwich feature and a rotating set of hot and cold specialty subs on focaccia and other breads.

The café serves a weekday lunch window and takes online orders with delivery through GrubHub. Single orders of more than 15 items need advance notice and staff confirmation, so larger orders are best placed by phone. The café also handles catering, including party sandwiches, meat and cheese trays, and brown bag lunches, and large carry-out orders should be placed the day before.
