Penquis

Penquis is a nonprofit community action agency, incorporated in 1967 to reduce the causes and conditions of poverty. Its programs cover fuel and heating assistance, Head Start and childcare, housing stability, transportation, financial wellness, health insurance help, and support for older adults, youth and families. It is one of nine community action agencies in Maine.

Most of its work focuses on low- and moderate-income residents of Penobscot, Piscataquis and Knox counties, though its programs reach all sixteen Maine counties. The main office is on Harlow Street in Bangor. People looking for fuel assistance can find the HEAP application on the agency's website, and Penquis also accepts volunteers and donations.
