HARIE

HARIE, short for Housing and Redevelopment Insurance Exchange, is a non-profit reciprocal insurance carrier licensed in Pennsylvania. It insures public bodies only, including housing and redevelopment authorities, counties, cities, boroughs, townships, water and sewer authorities, transit authorities and school districts. Its lines cover workers' compensation, general liability, fire, auto and crime.

Members are subscribers who share ownership of the exchange through a seven-member board of directors, and HARIE does not write coverage for private businesses. Claims are handled by an in-house adjusting team, with nurse case managers who help injured workers return to light-duty work. The company also runs safety seminars for its members. The main office is in Scranton, with a second office in Pittsburgh.
