Modern Financial Planning is a fee-only financial planning and investment management firm that works mainly with people in the tech community. Most clients hold stock options or RSUs, and the firm focuses on tracking, planning and tax strategy for equity compensation. Retirees make up a smaller share of its clients.

The firm works with clients remotely across the United States, using Zoom, email and phone, and about half of its clients are in California. New clients start with a free assessment booked by phone to see whether their situation fits the firm's expertise, and the firm limits how many new clients it takes on each quarter. Client investments are held at Charles Schwab, not at the firm, and the firm is paid only directly by its clients. The office is in Oakland.
