Borokhim's Oriental Rugs sells handmade Persian and oriental rugs, with a focus on Bijar, Heriz, Tabriz, Kashan, Kazak and Gabbeh styles. Albert Borokhim opened the first store on Monroe Street in 1972 after coming to Madison from Iran to study engineering at the University of Wisconsin, and his family had a long history in the rug trade there.
The rugs come from Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China, and the shop uses purchasing agents in Iran to find specific pieces through the year. Designs range from floral and medallion patterns to geometric, prayer, animal and scenic rugs. Delivery is free to customers in Madison, and the store sells runners and smaller rugs as well as room-size pieces.
