Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, usually called Midpen, is an independent special district created in 1972. It preserves a connected greenbelt of more than 70,000 acres of public open space across the greater Santa Cruz Mountains, from bay wetlands and redwood forests to coastal grasslands. Its work includes acquiring and protecting land, restoring natural habitat, and opening preserves for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education.

Visitors can pick up trail brochures and volunteer information at the administrative office in Los Altos, which is open on weekdays. Docent naturalists lead outdoor activities, and residents can send questions and comments by email or at public meetings. To report an emergency on a preserve, call 911 and give the preserve name and your location. Maintenance problems can be reported by phone to the office.
