City Hardwoods

City Hardwoods sells kiln-dried hardwood lumber and live edge slabs, much of it milled from urban logs that local tree services would otherwise send to the mulch mill. The business also builds custom furniture in its own woodshop. Caleb Gilbert and his father run it as a family business, having taken over the store in 2022 after their sawmill grew to the point where it needed a way to sell its lumber.

Logs are stacked and air dried before going into one of two kilns, and each board is planed or run through the slab CNC so the grain and color show while customers shop in the showroom. The business does not offer milling or drying to the public, but it does welcome logs from anyone having a tree taken down. It is on West Valley Avenue in Birmingham, open weekdays and Saturday morning.
