The Algonac Housing Commission runs low-income housing for seniors, families and persons with disabilities in Algonac. Its main complex, Algonquin Place, was built in 1975 and includes a three-story high-rise with an elevator, 50 one-bedroom apartments, and 20 townhome apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms. The commission's stated mission is safe, sanitary and affordable housing free from discrimination.
All utilities are included in the high-rise rent, while townhome tenants receive a utility allowance instead. Residents have a community room with a river view, a library and game room, a picnic patio with a gazebo, a playground, and laundry rooms on every floor. The office is open by appointment only on weekdays, and the commission's board meets monthly at 6 pm in the Moerhing Room at 1205 St. Clair River Drive.
