medTRANS Insurance is a member-owned medical stop-loss captive insurance company. Instead of buying coverage from a traditional carrier, each employer forms its own single parent captive, which issues a medical stop-loss policy to protect its self-funded health plan. The captives then share stop-loss risk with one another, and underwriting profits build up in each employer's captive over time.

This model is aimed at financially stable business owners who want more control over healthcare spending, plan design and insurance costs.
