Austen Riggs Center

Austen Riggs Center is a residential psychiatric treatment center for adults whose difficulties have lasted despite earlier treatment. Its work centers on intensive individual psychotherapy, usually four sessions a week, and a therapeutic community where patients take part in daily life and take on real responsibilities. Each patient is cared for by an interdisciplinary team that follows them from admission through discharge.

Treatment usually begins with a six-week residential evaluation and treatment stay. The Center also runs an online intensive outpatient program for college students and emerging adults in Massachusetts and Vermont, and a nursery school for local children from age 2.9 through kindergarten. The campus sits in Stockbridge in the Berkshire Hills. A first call is not a commitment, and families and clinicians can phone to ask about the model, costs, financial assistance and admission.
