Minnesota Association of Townships Insurance Trust

The Minnesota Association of Townships Insurance Trust, known as MATIT, is a joint risk pool that insures Minnesota townships against common losses. Townships formed it in 2002 to insure one another instead of buying from the private insurance market. Its coverage is designed around township needs, including Open Meeting Law exposure, road maintenance and land use decisions, and the trust also handles member claims and workers' compensation claims.

Only townships that belong to the Minnesota Association of Townships can take part, and a five-member board of trustees oversees the trust. As a tax-exempt public entity, it does not pay agent commissions or sales fees. Township officials can reach the office in St. Michael by phone or email, and staff are listed by role for contract services, claims and administration.
