Forestry

The Bernalillo District office is a New Mexico state forestry office that works with landowners and fire departments on forest and watershed health. Staff make field visits, write management plans, and help with thinning and tree planting projects, and they also hold workshops on forest and watershed health and provide fire training. The district reviews commercial harvesting on private land for compliance with state rules and handles wildland fire on state and private land, where more than 200 fires occur each year.

The district covers eight counties in west-central New Mexico, including Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe, and Valencia, and totals 6.6 million acres. The office is on Santa Fe Hills Boulevard in Rio Rancho, off Highway 550 about two miles north of State Road 528. Staff assist hundreds of landowners each year, so a phone call is the easiest way to set up a field visit.
