Open-admission animal shelter and pet food pantry34 Elbow St., Providence, RI
Providence Animal Rescue League is a nonprofit shelter that has cared for animals since 1913, taking in surrendered pets and some strays from the Greater Providence area and beyond. It operates as an open admission shelter and works closely with the state's animal control facilities. The League describes itself as no-kill, euthanizing only animals with serious safety risks or medical conditions beyond treatment.
Adoptions are conversation-based rather than barrier-heavy, with staff working to match each adopter with an animal. Every animal receives vaccinations, exams, and any needed treatment, including spay or neuter surgery. The shelter also runs a pet food pantry for families facing financial hardship, plus low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics and low-cost spay and neuter services for cats, dogs, and rabbits. Donations fund the work, as it takes no federal or state money.
