Butler Hospital is a non-profit, free-standing psychiatric hospital founded in 1844. It treats adults, seniors and adolescents for major psychiatric illnesses and substance use, and is known for addiction treatment, mood and anxiety disorders, and memory and dementia care. Its research has covered major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. It is also a major teaching hospital for Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School.
Care is delivered through inpatient programs, partial hospital programs and intensive outpatient programs. Teenagers ages 13 to 17 can self-refer to the inpatient teen unit or the teen partial hospital program, both available around the clock without going through an emergency room first. Same-day outpatient behavioral health assessments are offered through Express Care. The hospital is in Providence and belongs to the Care New England Health System, with about 900 staff and more than 75 volunteers.
