Modern Eye

Modern Eye is a full-service optical shop and optometrist's office with two Philadelphia locations, one in Center City and one in University City on the Penn campus. Eye examinations are thorough and include dilation, though the practice also offers Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging that often makes dilation unnecessary. The team fits all types of contact lenses, including hard-to-fit cases with astigmatism and bifocal needs, and co-manages care after LASIK surgery.

Allow one to one and a half hours for an eye exam, and bring sunglasses if you are dilated, since vision can stay fuzzy and light-sensitive for an hour or two afterward. Modern Eye sees patients by appointment, and in-house certified opticians cut lenses for frames bought there or elsewhere, adjust frames and repair nosepads and temple tips. The University City office is at The Shops at Penn on Walnut Street, and the Center City office is at the northeast corner of 13th and Walnut.
