The Temperance House

The Temperance House is a historic inn, tavern and scratch kitchen on South State Street in Newtown, open since 1772. The tavern pours 33 taps and a range of spirits, and the kitchen serves Latin and European flavors with a modern American touch, built around seasonal produce from local farms. Signature items include the Temperance Smash burger, the Innkeeper's Pasta with jumbo shrimp, and the Fried Chicken Sandwich, with wings, nachos and a late-night menu running to midnight.

Thirteen historic rooms upstairs make it possible to have dinner, a nightcap and a night's stay in one building. The kitchen serves lunch Tuesday through Friday from noon to 3 pm, the full menu until 9 pm, and a smaller late-night menu until midnight. Private events, rehearsal dinners, celebrations of life and catering are available, and gift cards are sold. Reservations for tables and rooms can be made online.
