Mathias Botanical Garden is a living plant collection run by UCLA Life Sciences and open to the public. Established in 1929, its collections focus on California and other Mediterranean-climate regions of the world. The garden also houses the UCLA Herbarium, which holds approximately 150,000 dried and pressed plant specimens, and it hosts events such as the Clarkia Flower Festival.
Admission is free, and the garden is open seven days a week, with hours that change between the summer and winter months. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Free guided tours are scheduled on set dates, and visitors can also walk through on their own with a self-guided or audio tour. Schools book K-12 field trips, and the grounds can be rented for weddings, social events and meetings.
