Literacy Network

Literacy Network, known locally as LitNet, provides free, one-on-one tutoring for adults. Its programs cover English for speakers of other languages, U.S. citizenship test preparation, adult basic education, and high school equivalency test preparation, delivered by professional staff and trained volunteer tutors. The organization has offered this tutoring since 1991, when it was founded by reading and learning disability specialists.

Tutoring is scheduled at times that suit each tutor and learner, and most sessions take place in libraries across the county, many with private rooms. Some sessions happen at the Susan Weintraub Tutor Resource Center in Lee, which is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and appointments outside those hours can be arranged. Tutors commit to at least one or two hours a week and do not need a teaching background, since LitNet provides training and materials. A second learning center is in Pittsfield.
