The Shop Rat Foundation

The Shop Rat Foundation is a nonprofit that introduces young people to careers in manufacturing, engineering, robotics, welding, precision machining, computer science and the skilled trades. It started in 2004 when a Jackson-based manufacturing entrepreneur opened his facility to area youth, and its Education Program now serves over 2,000 students a year through in-school curriculum, community events such as Manufacturing Day, and after-school classes and camps.

The Dream Makers Robotics Program brings an eight-week, hands-on robotics course into school days at no cost to schools for grades 3 through 8, serving nine area school districts. The foundation also works with Jackson Preparatory and Early College, Northwest Connect, Western Career Prep and local homeschool groups. Students in grades 3 through 10 can take part, and the mailing office is on West Michigan Avenue in Jackson.
