The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities is a regionally focused institute at Furman University that works on sustainability through education, research and leadership. It builds on the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and connects campus and community around developing sustainable, resilient communities in the Southeast. Its work includes collaborative research on pressing challenges, consulting with local partners, and student fellowships such as the Eco-Rep Fellows program.
The institute is housed in a net-zero, LEED-certified showcase home beside Furman Farm, an organic farm on the university's campus in Greenville. Local groups and organizations can work with the institute on projects, and students take part through fellowships and the Community Conservation Corps. Regular hours aren't published, so calling ahead is the best way to plan a visit.
