Chesapeake Animal Services Unit

Chesapeake Animal Services Unit is the city's animal shelter and animal control office, operating under the Police Department. Animal Control Officers respond to complaints about cruelty, animal bites, stray domestic animals, at-large animals, nuisance and vicious animals, and injured or sick animals, and they can issue summonses, secure warrants and seize animals. The shelter takes in strays and surrendered pets and places animals for adoption, with citizen volunteers and fosters supporting the work.

Officer response hours are currently reduced because of limited staffing, covering weekday daytime, with an on-call officer for emergencies overnight on weekdays and around the clock on weekends. To report a complaint, call the police non-emergency line and leave your name and number. The unit is on South Military Highway. Pet remains can be disposed of at the facility for a fee, but dead animals along roadways go through the city's customer contact center instead.
