Hemlock Bluffs Aikido

Hemlock Bluffs Aikido teaches aikido, a defensive martial art that relies on blending with an attacker and redirecting their energy. The school is an official dojo of the Aikido World Alliance, directed by Andrew Sato Shihan of Chicago, and it emphasizes building personal skill while helping others, with cooperation, respect and service both on and off the mats. Sunday mornings include an outdoor weapons class held at a nature preserve.

New students begin with a free orientation class on the first Tuesday of the month, when instructors arrive early to answer questions and help with the application. Monthly dues are $70, or $35 for full-time students and people who are unemployed, and the total cost to start is $125. Regular classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Wednesday evenings and weekend mornings, and the school is in Cary. Loose clothing is recommended, and jewelry and makeup should be removed before class.
