Reclaimed bikes, repairs, and youth mechanic training284 Amory Street, Boston, MA
Bikes Not Bombs is a nonprofit that reclaims discarded bicycles and puts them to work for youth training, economic mobility, and international development. Each year it collects roughly 5,000 used bikes and tons of parts from supporters across Greater Boston and New England. Most go overseas to development projects in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, while others go to teens in its Youth Pathways program, who learn bicycle safety and mechanics while earning bikes to keep.
The retail Bike Shop & Training Center sells refurbished bikes along with new cargo, road, hybrid, kids', and e-bikes, plus new and used parts and tools. Expert mechanics handle tune-ups and repairs, and the profits fund the group's youth and international work. The shop is in Jamaica Plain, just off the Southwest Corridor bike path and near the Orange Line. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.
